Here at Public, our lovely PR team have been busy working hard to promote Europe’s first ever underwater poker tournament!
Sponsored by leading national casino group, Napoleons Casino, and held in support of Macmillan Cancer Support, the once-in-a-lifetime event took place this month at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, raising £6,500 for charity and securing some fantastic national PR coverage.
The brainchild of poker and scuba enthusiast, John Stanley, the first-of-its-kind event was held in memory of John’s wife Gina who he sadly lost to cancer earlier this year. Combining his two passions in support of Macmillan, John dove down to six metres to take the role of dealer in the tournament, and recruited six of his fellow Napoleons buddies to flash their poker faces underwater.
The result was a visual spectacle, which attracted huge interest from both the public and the media alike…
As well as securing coverage in leading poker and scuba diving industry titles including The Scuba News, Bluff Europe and Poker.co.uk, Public was also able to ensure that the unique event appeared in national tabloid, the Daily Star. The day before the event, the PR team also landed the event organiser a live interview on top sports radio station, talkSPORT. Talk about making a splash!
The event was worth all of our hard work; it was a fantastic evening in support of a great cause, and it was Napoleons’ own Scott Bailey – card room manager at the Owlerton casino – who went on to win. Below are a few snaps from Ponds Forge in case you didn’t make it…look out for the mermaid!
If you’d like to make a donation, it’s not too late! Head to the event’s JustGiving page here. Thank you!
